Years ago, my boss asked me to assist his friend on a pipeline project. His friend is a senior colleague and I had done some work for him in the past so when he had some challenges on this project, he asked my boss to let me help him on the project. He had a pipeline survey project which ran from Agbo in Delta to Awka in Anambra.
His team had been working on the project already, but progress was slow. He wanted me to lead a crew and he bought an extra set of GNSS equipment to speed up the work.
He bought T300 from ComNav Technology Ltd. which was different from the equipment the crews were using on the project. I felt I was going to learn something new from the project so without asking the surveyor how much he would pay me for my services(I was already a registered surveyor so my own boss was not paying me a salary),I travelled with this T300 equipment to Awka to join the crews already working there.
In a few days, I learnt some new things about pipeline surveys and my own crew made so much progress that everyone was stunned. When I told the surveyor how many kilometers we had covered in less than one week he was very happy. He started praising me but I knew I did not really deserve all the praise so I told him the reason for the progress was that the T300 equipment was performing really well. It was very easy to use, stable and we were able to measure points in areas where the other equipment which they were using before I came on the project could not measure. We were able to finish the project on time simply because we introduced a different equipment with better performance. In addition, I made some friends on the project who are still my friends today and I met one of them while taking measurements on the road in Awka! He was a young surveyor and he came to ask me what survey project I was working on.
After this project, I told myself that when I eventually leave where I was working and I become my own boss, I will buy my own T300 equipment.
Few years later, I bought the N5 model from ComNav Technology Ltd. which is a higher model compared to T300. I loved the equipment so much that I started selling it to my colleagues.
Today, we are the Nigeria Partner of ComNav Technology China and we sell to surveyors, construction and real estate companies.
Everything started when I decided to “help” a senior colleague on a pipeline survey project without worrying about how much he would pay me because I was more interested in learning something new and useful.
