At OTIC Surveys Limited, we have always prided ourselves in our commitment to precision, efficiency, and client satisfaction which has been made possible through our use of advanced survey equipment.
Recently, we sent out a team of four experienced surveyors to handle a topographic and detail survey for a new client in Victoria Island, Lagos Nigeria. This project showed us that when it comes to accuracy in surveying, having top-notch instruments is a must! The purpose of this survey was to provide accurate data for a planning design.
Thankfully, the project site was located in a well-developed area of Lagos, making our team’s transportation to the site much easier. For over 15 days, our team navigated site complexities, completing the task on time while ensuring compliance with the hotel’s guidelines.
Though the site has well-defined boundaries which made the job smoother, however, the project’s difficulty required the use of different advanced equipment, including the SinoGNSS N3, N2, the ComNav TS-C200 Total Station, and a drone for aerial imaging. These tools were key in capturing the required data accurately.
The SinoGNSS N3 and N2, known for their robustness in providing precise GNSS data especially in difficult areas, were our primary tools for capturing most of the topographic data. Despite the area being well-developed, tall buildings occasionally interfered with satellite signals. In such instances, these GNSS receivers showcased their reliability by giving us a fixed solution even under a canopy, gathering accurate data where possible, and maintaining high precision where conditions allow.
However, the presence of these tall buildings meant that satellite signals were occasionally totally blocked. Our team effectively tackled this challenge by switching to total station, which compensated for these gaps in GNSS data.
For areas where GNSS coverage was obstructed due to towering structures, our team deployed the ComNav TS-C200 Total Station. The versatility of this total station allowed our team to obtain highly accurate distance, angle, and elevation measurements. This equipment was crucial for mapping hard-to-reach areas and provided consistent data to complement the GNSS output. This flexibility in equipment used underscored our commitment to precision regardless of external conditions.
To capture aerial images of the entire site, our team employed DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone, which allowed them to produce a comprehensive view of the environment. The aerial shots were instrumental in identifying terrain features and further assisted in correlating data collected from ground-based instruments. The high-resolution images enabled us to deliver detailed mapping and modeling of the site, enhancing the overall output of our survey.
One of the project’s most technical aspects was the client’s requirement for us to map the invert levels of the closed drainage systems and manholes on the site. We also needed to obtain the height of three high-rise buildings within the vicinity. These tasks demanded close collaboration with the client’s maintenance department, which provided us with staff to help open the manholes and drainages.
While most of the work proceeded smoothly, working in a highly regulated hotel environment came with its challenges. We had to be mindful of both hotel guests and the operational schedule of the hotel. We had to also adhere strictly to their rules to avoid disrupting the business or causing any inconvenience. Thanks to the professionalism of our team, we navigated these constraints without compromising the quality or timeliness of our work.
The client’s satisfaction was not only tied to the quality of our output but also to our team’s ability to work seamlessly with their staff. The support we received from their maintenance department and surveillance team was invaluable, and it’s clear that collaboration was a cornerstone of the project’s success.
