Recently, we deployed a team of three experienced surveyors for a topographic and bathymetric survey for volume computation at a dredging site in Festac, Lagos Nigeria. The purpose of this survey was to accurately ascertain the total volume of sand filled so far to assist the client to facilitate the payment of the dredging contractor.

We have done a lot of bathymetric surveys in Lagos but this one was different. The site was located beside a canal-like water body, with part of the land sand-filled including the boundary area. However, accessing the site was slightly challenging for our team due to an untarred road consisting of sand and stones. Interestingly, they encountered no Omonile issues, which is quite rare in Lagos and this allowed the smooth execution of the project.

Surprisingly, the client had previously engaged the services of multiple surveyors for the volume computation but remained dissatisfied with their work, feeling that they were not thorough enough. Someone finally referred us to him and he reached out to us for the survey. To achieve this, our team used advanced equipment like:

Echosounder – For a bathymetric survey of the water body.

Drone – To capture high-resolution aerial imagery for future reference.

SinoGNSS N3 & N2 GNSS Receiver – For ground control and topographic survey for the volume

computation.

Our survey activities included:

Marking the sand-filled area to define boundaries.

Taking spot heights to measure land elevation accurately.

Conducting a bathymetric survey to analyze water depths.

Capturing drone images for visual documentation.
